Yeast Infection

For starters, yeast infection is caused by mycosis or fungal yeast infection in the woman’s nether area. On the other hand, BV is caused by an imbalance of bacterial flora in the liquid lining of the female genitalia. There are a lot of recommendable over-the-counter products that can cure yeast infection. But the treatment of BV is a bit more complicated. Diagnosing BV correctly is the primary step in correctly treating it. That means consulting your health care provider is imperative. If this medical condition remains untreated (or misdiagnosed and treated as some other medical condition,) it can be the cause the breakdown of the natural immune defenses of the female reproductive organ, making the woman susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases.

If a woman has high levels of unwanted bacteria in the nether regions, the health care providers usually prescribe tea tree oil rich cleansing products. If a woman has high pH levels in the vaginal discharge, recommended products are usually those that can lower the acidity in the said area. If a woman has low lactobacillus count, doctors prescribe the medical addition of lactic bacteria. And lastly, there are women who may be introduced to the addition of a growth substrate (growing field for bacteria) directly into the vaginal cavity. This helps accelerate the development of the natural lactic acid bacteria, which should bring balance between the lactobacillus and the microorganisms from within.

Preventive measures against BV include: not douching; limiting the number of sexual partners; using prophylactics during male-female sexual intercourse at all times; and using all and the exact amount of the prescribed medicines for BV even and especially when the symptoms go away.

According to established studies, 1 out of every 3 women is bound to suffer from a bout with Bacterial Vaginosis at least once in her life. 2 out of 10 will suffer from moderate to severe cases of this medical condition. BV can have symptoms like painful stomach cramps, fish-like smelling vaginal discharge (soon after sex), irritation, vaginal swelling and intense itching in and around the female genital region. In mild cases, the only active sign of the onset of this medical condition is the fishy smelling discharge. Bacterial Vaginosis or BV should not be mistaken for candidiasis or yeast infection. Although both medical conditions almost have the same symptoms, the causes and treatments for each differ greatly.
